ABOUT THESE PAINTINGS

These works on paper extend my investigation into spatial perception and the physical act of seeing. Made in early 2025 in response to the installation Air of Different Temperatures, they compress questions of atmosphere and bodily awareness into a concentrated format.

Each work centres on a 33cm circular field suspended within a larger ground. Foreground, middle ground and background collapse into a zone of optical tension. Colour advances and recedes. Edges vibrate. The image shifts as the viewer moves.

Following a period of compromised vision, the work has become increasingly concerned with how the body mediates sight. The circle functions as both lens and threshold, suggesting a field of vision rather than a picture. At times, paint breaches its boundary, slipping beyond control and introducing material unpredictability.

The titles are formed through a parallel process of gathering and recombining fragments of language. They do not describe the work but extend it, operating as open, poetic structures in dialogue with the image.
